FAQ

Are any of your books printed inside?
Most of our books have approximately 50 blank pages inside. A Novel Idea has started producing a small line of books with pictures and text and those special books can be found in the Books With Printing section.

Why don't we offer more 'full text' books?
There are two major reasons why A Novel Idea avoids producing a lot of books with printed pages. First, our books are intended to be an affordable way to stock your miniature bookshelf or library shelves. Printing inside the books dramatically increases their cost. Second, and the biggest drawback, is the amount of text inside a full-sized novel. While we are able to scale the length and width of the pages, we are unable to scale the thickness of paper. Even with the lightweight paper we use for our pages, we cannot fit more than approximately 50 pages in a single book. And no matter how small we make the text, it is just not feasible to fit an entire novel onto those few pages. So rather than produce highly abridged versions of great novels, we prefer to keep our prices reasonable and label our books 'For Display Only'.

Do we ever make 1:6th scale books?
At the moment, A Novel Idea produces only 1:12th scale and smaller books. We are currently concentrating on expanding our library of titles in these small scales, and that is keeping our elves plenty busy. But while we have no immediate plans to expand into larger scales, that does not rule out the possibility of producing them down the line.

Our newest employee, Shadow, handles the quality control department. No order leaves our premises without being personally inspected by him.

Weren't you once known as 'Santa's Workshop Miniatures?
Yes. We started out life over 15 years ago making strictly holiday miniatures, and that's where that name fit in. Over the years however, our elves needed something to keep them busy in the 'off-holiday season', and they took to tooling the workshop with printing equipment. Slowly but surely, the holiday miniatures were overtaken by the demand for high-quality, low-cost miniature books.

So what now? We have changed our name to 'A Novel Idea', which was a wonderful suggestion that came from renowned miniaturist Alice Zinn. It may take a little while to phase out the old identity, but rest assured that we have not changed hands, we are merely moving forward with the times. Our books will continue to be produced with the same love and care they always have.

Will "A Novel Idea" continue to offer any holiday miniatures?
Of course! Since we have spent so many years building up our network of holiday miniature artisans, as well as honing our own tree-decorating skills, we will periodically retool the workshop to concentrate on holiday miniatures. Check our website frequently for new artisan miniatures; quantities will be limited and they tend to sell quickly.
